Lisa Novick Goldberg’s first book, The Apple and the Shady Tree is a terrific Mafia memoir. From her early family Mafia ties to the present day. Lisa fearlessly delves into volatile family life, crimes ties, and PSTD. She flavors this well-seasoned book also with nostalgic memories of growing up on Long Island. In this book, she has managed to heal herself and hopefully help others by encouraging others to create and gain from pain as well. Lisa is a true survivor and The Apple and The Shady Tree is insightful and entertaining. I highly recommend it and would love to see it on screen as well.

The Apple and The Shady Tree – The Mafia, My Family and Me
Lisa Novick Goldberg
This captivating book chronicles her most unusual childhood as both a Jewish and Mafia princess, given her father’s role as a money man connected to the notorious Genovese mob family. The characters fictionalized in The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino and, of course, The Sopranos were all part of her real world. She knew them as aunts and uncles - in essence, her extended family sharing vacations, birthdays and social gatherings, etc.

These children of Jewish mobsters were kept well shielded from their fathers’ affairs
What’s it like growing up the child of a mobster – and a Jewish mobster to boot?
The idea of stringing together various stories about children of Jewish mobsters came to me as I started to read a terrific new book that was sent to our office, totally unexpectedly.
The title of the book is “The Apple and the Shady Tree”. The author is someone by the name of Lisa Novick Goldberg. The book is available on Amazon in either paperback or Kindle format.
There were a couple of ideas that kept crossing my mind as I read Lisa Novick Goldberg’s book. One was: Are criminals self-isolating during these extraordinary times?

Kirkus REVIEW - An honest, funny, and thorough reflection on a complicated family.
In this memoir, a woman recounts her New York upbringing and investigates her father’s mob ties.
Goldberg’s book begins in 1987. One night, she and her then-husband, Mark, were in their New York City apartment, watching the local news. The lead story was about the murder of Irwin Schiff, who was shot in the head while dining at an Italian restaurant in Manhattan.

medium.com - Author Lisa Novick Goldberg: “We all have our special story to tell; Capture your memories in writing … the good, the bad, the happy, the sad”
Perhaps the most empowering lesson that I would like to impart to my readers is that most of us have to have the strength, the ability, and the resilience to change the parts of our life that consistently hold us back from reaching our best selves. I always say, “our past explains who we are, but our past doesn’t define us.”
Another empowering lesson is that we all have our special story to tell.

“This was such an interesting memoir, as it was written with such honesty at the challenges and rewards of being the daughter of someone "connected" to the mafia in New York. I admire the author's writing, as this book wasn't cheesy, as some mafia memoirs are because they exaggerate in an obvious way.”

Now imagine having to testify about your own father's ties to the Mob.

I really enjoyed this honest account of such a different lifestyle, I both laughed out loud and my heart went out to the writer. The lifestyle that she loved was portrayed so well in her words.
